Applying the parking brake with EPB switch

  1. Firmly depress the brake pedal.

  2. Pull the EPB switch upward.

  3. Verify that the brake warning indicator illuminates, confirming that the Electronic Parking Brake has been engaged.

If the AUTO HOLD function is active when the Kia Telluride is turned off, the EPB will engage automatically. You can also apply the Electronic Parking Brake manually by pulling up the EPB switch after switching the vehicle off.

WARNING

Never leave children or pets unattended inside your vehicle. They may unintentionally cause the Kia Telluride to move by:

  • Releasing the parking brake.

  • Shifting the transmission out of P (Park).

  • Starting the engine.

  • Operating switches, pedals, or other vehicle controls.

TIP

  • If your Kia Telluride does not remain completely stationary on a steep incline or while towing a trailer, increase the parking brake clamping force by performing the following:

    1. Apply the EPB.

    2. Continue holding the EPB switch upward for more than 3 seconds.

  • Never apply the EPB while the vehicle is moving unless it is necessary during an emergency.

  • You may hear a clicking sound or the electric brake motor operating while the EPB is applied or released. These sounds are normal and indicate that the system is functioning correctly.

Automatic application of EPB

The EPB is automatically applied under the following conditions:

  • The transmission is shifted into P (Park) while the vehicle is on an incline.

  • The vehicle is turned off while AUTO HOLD remains activated.

  • The vehicle moves slightly while it is already in P (Park).

  • While AUTO HOLD is active:

    • The driver's door is opened.

    • The hood is opened.

    • The liftgate is opened.

    • The vehicle remains stopped on a steep incline for approximately 10 minutes or longer.

  • Another vehicle control system requests automatic application of the EPB.

TIP

On Kia Telluride models equipped with both EPB and AUTO HOLD, the Electronic Parking Brake is automatically engaged when the vehicle is switched to the OFF position while AUTO HOLD remains active. Turn off AUTO HOLD before switching the vehicle off if automatic EPB engagement is not desired.

Emergency braking with the EPB switch

If the service brake cannot be used while driving, you can perform emergency braking by pulling up and continuously holding the EPB switch.

The emergency braking function remains active only while the EPB switch is being held.

WARNING

Do not use the EPB to stop the Kia Telluride during normal driving except in an emergency. Applying the Electronic Parking Brake at regular driving speeds may result in a sudden loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of an accident that could lead to serious injury or death. If emergency braking becomes necessary, operate the system carefully and maintain full control of the vehicle.

TIP

During emergency braking, the brake warning indicator illuminates to show that the EPB system is actively assisting with vehicle deceleration.

If the EPB has been used for emergency braking, have your Kia Telluride inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.
