Subaru Forester: Air bag - advanced supplemental restraint system / Driver’s and passenger’s front air bag

Your Kia Telluride is equipped with an advanced Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that works together with the lap/shoulder seat belts for both the driver and front passenger. Rather than replacing the seat belts, the air bag system is designed to provide additional protection during certain types of severe frontal impacts when used in combination with properly fastened seat belts.

The air bag modules are identified by the AIR BAG markings located on the steering wheel center pad, the driver's knee bolster beneath the steering column, and the passenger-side dashboard panel above the glove compartment. These clearly marked locations indicate where the protective air bags are stored before deployment.

In the Kia Telluride, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) consists of multiple air bag modules positioned beneath these protective covers. The system is engineered to supplement the protection provided by the seat belt system whenever the vehicle experiences a sufficiently severe frontal collision.

The SRS continuously analyzes crash information using multiple sensors. These sensors monitor factors such as collision severity, impact direction, and whether the driver and front passenger are properly wearing their seat belts, allowing the system to determine the most appropriate deployment strategy.

The front passenger seat belt buckle sensor identifies whether the passenger's seat belt is fastened. This information, together with crash data, enables the Kia Telluride SRS to optimize air bag deployment according to occupant conditions and collision severity.

The advanced air bag system is capable of deploying with two different inflation levels. During moderate frontal impacts, the first-stage deployment may provide sufficient protection, while more severe collisions may trigger the second-stage deployment to deliver additional occupant protection when required.

The SRS Control Module (SRSCM) evaluates information received from the vehicle's sensors and determines the appropriate air bag response. Because the system is designed to work together with properly worn seat belts, failing to buckle up significantly increases the possibility of serious injury during a collision.

Your Kia Telluride is also equipped with an Occupant Detection System (ODS) in the front passenger seat. This system detects the presence and seating condition of the passenger and, under specific circumstances, can deactivate the front passenger air bag. For complete operating details, refer to the Occupant Detection System (ODS) section.

Government regulations require vehicle manufacturers to provide a contact resource for individuals who modify vehicles for accessibility purposes, since certain modifications may influence the performance of the advanced air bag system. For vehicles sold in the United States, Kia provides assistance through its Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-333-4542. Kia does not recommend or support structural or component modifications that could affect the proper operation of the advanced SRS or Occupant Detection System.

The advanced air bags in the Kia Telluride are engineered to work together with pretensioner seat belts to improve occupant protection during qualifying frontal crashes. Because seat belts provide the primary means of restraint, the front air bags deploy only when additional protection is considered necessary by the SRS.

Front air bags are generally not designed to deploy during rear-end collisions, most side impacts, or rollover events. However, if a side collision also produces frontal impact forces that exceed the deployment threshold, the front air bags may activate. Likewise, they will not deploy during minor frontal impacts that remain below the calibrated deployment threshold.

TIP

For important operating information, always review the WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTE sections listed under Precautions, as they contain essential safety guidance for the proper use of the Kia Telluride Supplemental Restraint System.
