Subaru Forester: Driving your vehicle / Before driving

Before driving your Kia Telluride, take a few moments to inspect both the vehicle and the surrounding area. Once inside, complete several important safety checks to help ensure that the vehicle is ready for safe and reliable operation.

Be sure the exhaust system does not leak

  • Inspect the exhaust system whenever the vehicle is lifted for an oil change or any other maintenance procedure.

  • If you notice a change in the sound of the exhaust system or if the underside of the Kia Telluride strikes an object while driving, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

Do not inhale exhaust fumes or allow the engine to idle for extended periods inside an enclosed or poorly ventilated area. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas that can cause unconsciousness or death through asphyxiation.

WARNING

Do not drive with the liftgate open. Harmful exhaust gases can enter the passenger compartment. If it is absolutely necessary to drive with the liftgate open, follow these precautions:

  1. Close all windows.

  2. Open the side ventilation outlets.

  3. Set the air intake control to outside air, select Kia Telluride fresh air ventilation mode icon or Kia Telluride windshield ventilation mode icon, and adjust the blower fan to its highest speed.

Before entering the vehicle

  • Make sure all windows, exterior mirrors, and exterior lighting are clean and unobstructed.

  • Inspect the tires for proper condition and any visible damage.

  • Check underneath the Kia Telluride for any signs of fluid leakage.

  • Before reversing, confirm that the area behind the vehicle is clear of people, animals, and other obstacles.

Necessary inspections

Regularly check important fluid levels, including engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Follow the recommended maintenance intervals outlined in the Maintenance section to help keep your Kia Telluride operating properly.

WARNING

Distracted driving

Keep your full attention on driving at all times. Safe and lawful operation of the vehicle is your primary responsibility. Avoid using handheld devices or interacting with vehicle systems in a manner that distracts you from the road.

Before starting

  • Close and securely lock every door.

  • Adjust the driver's seat so all pedals and controls can be reached comfortably.

  • Fasten your seat belt and make sure every passenger is properly buckled before driving.

  • Adjust both the inside and outside rearview mirrors for the best possible visibility.

  • Verify that all exterior lights are functioning correctly.

  • Check the instrument cluster gauges.

  • With the vehicle in the ON position, confirm that all warning indicators perform their normal self-check.

  • Release the parking brake and verify that the brake warning light has turned off.

For safe operation, become thoroughly familiar with the controls, safety systems, and equipment installed in your Kia Telluride before beginning your trip.

WARNING

Check surroundings

Always carefully inspect the area around your vehicle before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse). Pay particular attention to children, pedestrians, cyclists, pets, and any nearby obstacles.

WARNING

Driving under the influence

Never operate the Kia Telluride while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that may impair your judgment, reaction time, or driving ability. Even small amounts of alcohol or certain medications can significantly reduce your ability to drive safely.

WARNING

Proper footwear

Always wear footwear that allows safe and precise operation of the brake and accelerator pedals. Shoes such as high heels, sandals, ski boots, or other unsuitable footwear may interfere with proper pedal control.

WARNING

California Proposition 65

Engine exhaust and many automotive components, including certain interior materials, contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. In addition, certain vehicle fluids and wear-related materials may also contain or release these substances.

WARNING

Loose objects

Store all personal belongings securely before driving. During sudden braking, sharp turns, or a collision, unsecured objects can move into the driver's footwell, interfere with pedal operation, and increase the risk of an accident.

NOTE

If you intend to park or stop the Kia Telluride while it remains in the ON position, avoid pressing the accelerator pedal for an extended period. Doing so may overheat the engine or exhaust system and increase the risk of fire.
