The ENGINE START/STOP button in the Kia Telluride illuminates whenever the front door is opened, making it easier to locate in low-light conditions. The illumination automatically turns off approximately 30 seconds after the door is closed, or immediately when the theft-alarm system is armed.

Your Kia Telluride provides four distinct ignition modes, allowing you to operate the vehicle's electrical systems and start or stop the engine safely and conveniently.

OFF

• To shut off the engine, press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the vehicle is in P (Park), changing the ignition from the START/RUN position to the OFF position.

• To switch off the vehicle's electrical power, press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the ignition is in the ON position and the transmission is in P (Park).

• If the transmission is not in P (Park), pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button will not switch the system directly to OFF. Instead, it changes to the ACC position.

Anti-theft steering column lock: (if equipped)

• To help protect the Kia Telluride against theft, the steering wheel automatically locks when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the OFF position.

• The steering wheel also locks automatically when the driver's door is opened.

• If the steering wheel does not lock correctly after opening the driver's door, a warning chime will sound. Attempt to lock the steering wheel again. If the condition remains, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

• The steering wheel may also remain unlocked and a warning chime may sound if the ENGINE START/STOP button is pressed while already in the OFF position after opening the driver's door. Close the door to allow the steering lock to engage and silence the warning chime.

ACC (Accessory)

In the ACC position, the steering wheel unlocks and electrical accessories become available without starting the engine. Because electrical components continue to consume power, extended use in this mode may discharge the 12V battery.

To enter ACC mode, press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the vehicle is in the OFF position without pressing the brake pedal.

If the Kia Telluride remains in the ACC position for longer than one hour, the system automatically switches off to help prevent battery discharge.

ON

When the ignition is in the ON position, the vehicle's electrical systems are active and the instrument cluster performs its normal system check before engine start. To enter this mode, press the ENGINE START/STOP button without depressing the brake pedal.

The warning lights illuminate temporarily before the engine starts so their operation can be verified. Avoid leaving the Kia Telluride in the ON position for an extended period without starting the engine, as this may discharge the 12V battery.

START/RUN

To start the engine, firmly depress the brake pedal and press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the transmission is in either P (Park) or N (Neutral). For maximum safety, always start the Kia Telluride with the transmission in P (Park).

Starting the engine

1. Carry the smart key with you, or leave it inside the Kia Telluride where it remains securely under your control.

2. Firmly apply the parking brake before attempting to start the engine.

3. Move the transmission to P (Park) and fully depress the brake pedal.

4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button without pressing the accelerator pedal.

5. Do not allow the vehicle to idle for an extended warm-up period. Begin driving smoothly at moderate engine speeds and avoid sudden acceleration or hard braking until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Starting the engine with smart key

The Kia Telluride can be started by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button only when a valid smart key is detected inside the vehicle.

Even if the smart key is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start if the key is too far away from the driver's seating position or cannot be detected properly.

Whenever the vehicle is in the ACC or ON position and a door is opened, the system automatically checks for the presence of the smart key.

If the smart key is not detected inside the vehicle, the () indicator flashes and the Key not in vehicle warning message appears in the instrument cluster. After all doors are closed, a warning chime will sound for several seconds. Always keep the smart key inside the Kia Telluride while operating the vehicle.

TIP

• If the smart key battery is discharged or the smart key is not operating correctly, you can still start the Kia Telluride by placing the smart key on the key recognition area located on the center console and then pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button while it is in the OFF position.

• If the stop lamp fuse has blown, normal engine starting will not be possible.

  Replace the damaged fuse whenever possible. If immediate replacement is not possible, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 10 seconds while the ignition is in the ACC position to start the engine. The engine can start without pressing the brake pedal under these emergency conditions, but for maximum safety you should always depress the brake pedal before starting the Kia Telluride.
