Subaru Forester: Introduction / Fuel requirements

Your new Kia Telluride is engineered to operate only on unleaded fuel with a pump octane number ((R+M)/2) of 87, which corresponds to Research Octane Number 91, or higher. Methanol-blended fuels must not be used, as they can interfere with proper drivability and may damage important fuel and emission-related components.

The Kia Telluride is designed to deliver its best balance of performance, efficiency, and reliability when it is filled with UNLEADED FUEL. Using the correct fuel also helps reduce exhaust emissions and minimizes spark plug fouling, allowing the engine and emission control system to operate as intended.

Never pour fuel system cleaning agents into the fuel tank unless the product has been specifically approved or recommended for this vehicle. If you are unsure which fuel additive is acceptable for your Kia Telluride, consult an authorized Kia dealer before using it.

Tighten the fuel cap until it clicks 1 time. If the cap is loose, incorrectly installed, or not fully secured, the Check Engine light may illuminate.

Gasoline containing alcohol and methanol

Gasohol, which is a blend of gasoline and ethanol, also known as grain alcohol, and gasoline or gasohol containing methanol, also known as wood alcohol, may be sold together with or in place of leaded or unleaded gasoline in some markets.

According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, ethanol may be used in your vehicle when it remains within the approved limits.

Do not use gasohol containing more than 15% ethanol. Ethanol contains less energy than gasoline and also attracts water, which means it can reduce the fuel efficiency of your Kia Telluride and may lower your MPG results during normal driving.

Do not use gasoline or gasohol that contains any amount of methanol. Methanol can cause drivability concerns and may damage the fuel system, engine control system, and emission control system.

Stop using any type of gasohol immediately if you notice drivability problems such as rough running, hesitation, hard starting, or reduced engine performance.

Vehicle damage or drivability problems may not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty if they are caused by using any of the following fuels:

1. Gasoline or gasohol containing methanol.

2. Leaded fuel or leaded gasohol.

3. Gasohol containing more than 15% ethanol.

“E85” fuel is an alternative fuel made up of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, and it is produced only for vehicles designed as Flexible Fuel Vehicles. “E85” is not compatible with your Kia Telluride. Using “E85” may cause poor engine performance and damage the engine and fuel system. Kia recommends that customers do not use fuel with an ethanol content higher than 15%.

Other fuels

Using fuels that contain Silicone (Si), Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl (MMT), Manganese (Mn), or other metallic additives may cause vehicle and engine damage. These fuels can lead to misfiring, poor acceleration, engine stalling, catalyst melting, clogging, abnormal corrosion, reduced component life, and other performance or durability problems. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate if fuel containing these additives is used in the Kia Telluride.

Gasoline containing MMT

Some gasoline contains harmful manganese-based fuel additives such as MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl). Kia does not recommend using gasoline that contains MMT. This type of fuel can reduce vehicle performance, affect the emission control system, and cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the instrument cluster to come on.

Do not use methanol

Fuels containing methanol, also called wood alcohol, must not be used in your vehicle. This type of fuel can reduce vehicle performance and damage components of the fuel system, engine control system, and emission control system.

Fuel Additives

Kia recommends using good quality gasoline treated with detergent additives, such as TOP TIER™ detergent gasoline. These fuels help prevent deposit formation inside the engine, allowing the engine to run cleaner and supporting proper performance of the emission control system.

For more information about TOP TIER™ detergent gasoline, visit the website (http://www.toptiergas.com). If TOP TIER™ detergent gasoline is not used regularly and the engine becomes difficult to start or does not run smoothly, separate gasoline additives may be purchased and used as directed.

If TOP TIER™ detergent gasoline is not available, 1 bottle of additive should be added to the fuel tank every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or at every engine oil change. These additives are available from your authorized Kia dealer, along with proper instructions for use. Do not mix other additives, as combining products may reduce effectiveness or create unwanted fuel system issues.

Operation in foreign countries

If you plan to drive your Kia Telluride in another country, prepare in advance and make sure the vehicle can be operated legally and safely under local conditions. Be sure to:

• Follow all applicable regulations regarding registration and insurance.

• Confirm that acceptable unleaded fuel is available before driving in that country.
