Subaru Forester: What to do in an emergency / If the engine does not start

If your Kia Telluride engine fails to start when expected, systematically verify basic prerequisites first—specifically ensuring sufficient fuel remains in the tank and confirming the 12V auxiliary battery retains proper charge.

If the engine does not turn over or turns over slowly

  1. Confirm the transmission selector is securely positioned in Park (P) and verify that the electronic parking brake is firmly engaged before attempting starting steps.

  2. Inspect the 12V battery terminal posts to ensure cable clamps are free of corrosion, clean, and tightly fastened to the posts.

  3. Switch on an cabin interior dome light for diagnostic testing. If the lamp dims significantly or extinguishes when engaging the starter button, the 12V battery is depleted and requires charging or jump starting.

  4. Examine the visible starter motor electrical leads and starter relay connections to confirm they are securely mounted without loose wiring.

NOTE

Never attempt to push-start or tow-start your Kia Telluride to crank the engine. Attempting a manual bump start can cause severe powertrain or transmission damage; always follow approved jump starting procedures instead.

If the engine turns over normally but does not start

  1. Check the fuel gauge level and add appropriate fuel if the tank has run empty.

  2. Ensure the ignition switch is turned completely to the OFF position, then inspect the wiring harness connectors at all ignition coils and spark plugs, firmly re-seating any loose or disconnected fittings.

  3. Visually inspect accessible engine compartment fuel lines to verify there are no obvious leaks, disconnections, or physical kinks.

  4. If the engine continues to crank without firing after checking these items, contact an authorized Kia dealer service center or request qualified roadside assistance.
