If the engine temperature gauge on your Kia Telluride instrument cluster spikes into the hot zone, or if you notice a sudden loss of acceleration power, or hear loud metallic pinging or knocking sounds from under the hood, the engine is likely suffering from an extreme overheating condition.

Should an overheating event occur while driving, perform the following safety procedure immediately:

Safely signal, reduce speed, and carefully pull completely off the roadway onto a wide, level shoulder as quickly as traffic conditions permit.
Move the transmission shift selector into P (Park) and firmly engage the electronic parking brake to secure the vehicle.
Turn off the air conditioning system right away to relieve the heavy parasitic thermal load placed on the engine cooling system.
If you observe engine coolant dripping or pooling under the vehicle, or if steam is actively escaping from beneath the engine hood, turn off the engine immediately. Stay well back and do not raise the hood until steam completely dissipates and fluid leakage halts entirely.
If there are no visible signs of coolant leaks under the engine compartment and no steam escaping, allow the engine to remain idling and visually verify whether the electric cooling fan is actively spinning behind the radiator.

If the cooling fan is stationary or fails to operate properly, shut off the engine right away to prevent severe thermal head distortion.
Carefully inspect the engine compartment to determine if the water pump drive belt is missing, damaged, or thrown off its pulleys.
- If the drive belt remains intact on the pulleys, inspect it closely to ensure it maintains proper mechanical tension without slippage.
- If drive belt condition and tension appear satisfactory, check surrounding radiator surfaces, coolant hoses, and lower engine bay areas for active fluid leaks. (Note: Clear water dripping from the climate control evaporator tube after air conditioning operation is completely normal and should not be mistaken for coolant leaks).
If the water pump drive belt is snapped or severely damaged, or if coolant is actively leaking from cracked hoses or radiator seams, shut off the engine instantly and contact your nearest authorized Kia dealer or roadside recovery service for immediate transport.
If no obvious cause for the engine overheating can be identified, leave the vehicle shut down and wait patiently until the engine temperature cools completely back to normal operating levels. If liquid coolant was lost during the thermal spike, carefully top off the fluid level in the coolant expansion reservoir up to the designated halfway mark once fully cooled.
Drive forward with extreme caution while constantly monitoring the instrument cluster temperature indicator for any renewed thermal spikes. If overheating reoccurs, pull over safely and have your Kia Telluride thoroughly inspected by a qualified technician at an authorized Kia dealership.

Under the hood

While the engine is running or cooling down, keep long hair, hands, fingers, loose clothing, and neckties safely away from high-speed moving parts (such as the radiator cooling fan blades and accessory drive belts) to prevent severe bodily entanglement injuries.

Coolant reservoir cap

Never attempt to unscrew or remove the engine coolant reservoir cap while the engine remains hot or pressurized. Scalding hot coolant spray and pressurized steam can violently erupt from the filler neck, causing severe third-degree burns to your face, hands, and body.

NOTE

A significant loss of engine coolant indicates an active pressure leak within the cooling circuit hoses, radiator core, or water pump housing. Have your Kia Telluride cooling system pressure-tested and repaired as soon as possible by an authorized Kia service center.

When an engine overheats due to low coolant levels, pouring cold fluid rapidly into an extremely hot engine can trigger severe thermal shock, leading to cracked cylinder heads or warped engine blocks. To avoid costly mechanical damage, allow components to cool down and pour replacement engine coolant very slowly in small, gradual quantities.
