Subaru Forester: If you have a flat tire (with spare tire) / Changing tires

  1. Safely park your Kia Telluride on a flat, solid surface away from moving traffic, engage the electronic parking brake firmly, and turn off the engine completely.

  2. Turn on the hazard warning lights immediately to make your vehicle visible to approaching drivers.

  3. Retrieve the emergency tire-changing toolkit—including the wheel lug nut wrench, jack, jack handle—and the spare tire from the storage compartment in your Kia Telluride.

  4. Place sturdy wheel chocks on both the front and back of the tire positioned diagonally opposite the wheel you plan to lift.

  5. Using the lug wrench, loosen each wheel lug nut by turning it counterclockwise approximately one full turn. Do not remove the lug nuts entirely while the Kia Telluride is still resting on the ground.

  6. Position the jack beneath the designated front (1) or rear (2) jacking point nearest to the flat tire. Align the jack head precisely with the reinforced jacking plate under the frame, which features two guiding tabs and an indexing raised dot.

  7. Attach the jack handle to the jack mechanism and turn it clockwise, raising the Kia Telluride until the tire lifts roughly 1.2 inches (30 mm) off the ground. Pause to confirm that the vehicle remains stable and securely supported before loosening any hardware further.

  8. Unscrew the loosened lug nuts completely by hand and set them aside carefully. Carefully lift the wheel off the threaded studs and lay it flat on its face to prevent it from rolling. Lift the spare wheel, align its mounting holes with the hub studs, and slide it evenly into place.

If aligning the wheel proves challenging, tilt the rim slightly to catch the top mounting stud first. Gently sway the wheel back and forth until the remaining holes slide over the rest of the studs smoothly.

  9. Hold the spare wheel flush against the hub, thread the lug nuts back onto the studs, and hand-tighten them clockwise. Give the tire a light shake to ensure it seats squarely against the mounting face, then tighten each nut by hand as far as possible.

  10. Turn the jack handle counterclockwise to lower your Kia Telluride back down until the tire contacts the ground, then remove the jack.

Using the wheel lug wrench, tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross star pattern to apply even pressure across the wheel hub. Ensure the wrench socket seats fully over each nut; never apply foot pressure or leverage extensions to the handle. Work around the wheel twice to confirm every fastener is thoroughly secured. Promptly visit an authorized Kia dealership or service center to have the wheel nuts torqued to exact factory specification using a calibrated torque wrench.

WARNING

  • To reduce the risk of severe personal injury, use only the emergency jack supplied with your Kia Telluride at the designated jacking points under the body frame. Never attempt to lift the vehicle using body panels, suspension arms, or bumper assemblies.

  • To prevent accidental vehicle movement or roll-away during maintenance, fully engage the parking brake and secure wheel chocks behind and in front of the tire positioned diagonally opposite the wheel being serviced.

  • Ensure all four wheels are properly stabilized. Never allow passengers to remain inside the vehicle or re-enter while the vehicle is raised on the jack.

  • Before mounting any wheel, thoroughly clean all rust, dirt, grit, and foreign debris from the contact surfaces of the wheel rim, brake disc, hub face, and rotor mounting hardware. Retaining fasteners must sit flush so they do not interfere with flat metal-to-metal seating. Installing a wheel over dirty mounting surfaces can cause the lug nuts to back off while driving, leading to wheel detachment, loss of vehicle control, severe collision, or death.

  • Verify that the inner wheel surface rests completely flush against the hub assembly. An improper or uneven mounting interface can cause lug nuts to loosen over time, leading to wheel separation and potential loss of vehicle control.

  • Because a jacked vehicle can shift unexpectedly and slip off its support, always observe these fundamental safety measures:

    • Never place your body, hands, or legs beneath any portion of a vehicle supported solely by a mechanical jack.

    • Never attempt a tire change in active traffic lanes or on narrow shoulders. Guide the vehicle completely off the roadway onto a firm, level surface well away from passing traffic. If a safe location is unavailable, contact professional roadside assistance immediately.

    • Always use the factory-supplied jack specifically engineered for your Kia Telluride.

    • Lift the vehicle exclusively from the reinforced front and rear frame jacking points. Under no circumstances should bumpers or structural body panels be used as lifting points.

    • Do not start the engine or allow it to run while the vehicle rests on the jack.

    • Keep all occupants out of the cabin while the vehicle is elevated.

    • Keep children at a safe distance away from the workspace, vehicle, and surrounding roadway.

Wheel nut tightening torque

Steel wheel and aluminum alloy wheel: 79–94 lbf·ft (11–13 kgf·m)

Using an accurate tire pressure gauge, unthread the valve stem cap and check the cold inflation pressure. If the reading falls below the recommended setting listed on the driver-side door jamb placard, drive cautiously to the nearest service station and inflate the tire to its proper specification. If the tire is overinflated, bleed air through the valve stem until reaching the correct pressure. Always screw the protective valve stem cap back on tightly to keep out dirt and prevent slow air leaks. If a cap goes missing, replace it promptly.

Once the spare is installed, store the damaged tire securely in the spare tire bay and return the jack, handle, and lug wrench to their designated trunk compartments.

Note that wheel lug studs on your Kia Telluride utilize specific metric threads. Exercise extreme caution and verify thread pitch and seat contour before attempting to install aftermarket wheels or custom lug nuts. When in doubt, consult an authorized Kia dealer for compatible hardware.

WARNING

  • Damaged, cross-threaded, or stripped wheel studs lose their clamping ability and may snap under load. This can cause the wheel to detach while driving, resulting in a dangerous vehicle collision.

  • Never apply lubricants, oil, anti-seize, or grease to wheel studs or lug nut threads. Lubrication alters torque values and can cause nuts to loosen unexpectedly during operation, creating an extreme safety hazard.

NOTE

Reusing lug nuts

When reinstalling a wheel on your Kia Telluride, always use the original lug nuts removed from that wheel position. If a replacement nut is required, ensure it features identical metric threads and matching chamfered seating contours. Threading a non-metric or mismatched nut onto the stud will fail to secure the wheel properly, strip the stud threads, and necessitate full stud replacement.
