Checking the engine oil level

Engine oil plays a vital role in keeping your vehicle running smoothly—it lubricates moving internal components, reduces friction, cools critical parts, and operates various hydraulic systems inside the powertrain. Because a natural degree of engine oil consumption occurs during normal driving, checking and refilling the lubricant level on a routine basis is essential. Regularly monitoring fluid levels in accordance with the recommended service schedule prevents thermal breakdown and ensures long-term operational performance for your Kia Telluride.

To perform an accurate inspection of the engine oil level, follow this step-by-step procedure:

1. Park the vehicle on a flat, perfectly level surface and engage the parking brake.

2. Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches normal operating temperature.

3. Turn off the ignition, loosen and remove the oil filler cap, and pull out the dipstick. Allow approximately 15 minutes for the oil to drain completely back into the oil pan.

4. Wipe the dipstick thoroughly clean using a lint-free cloth or paper towel, then reinsert it fully into the dipstick tube.

5. Withdraw the dipstick once more and inspect the oil level marking. The oil level should fall clearly between the F (Full) and L (Low) indicator marks. If the level rests below or near the L line, carefully add sufficient oil to bring the fluid level up toward the F line without overfilling.

Always utilize a clean funnel when topping off the engine oil to prevent accidental spills onto hot manifold surfaces or surrounding wiring harnesses.

• Avoid spilling engine oil over engine components when adding or changing oil. Clean up any accidental spills immediately using a shop rag.

• During the initial break-in period of a brand-new vehicle, engine oil consumption rates may be slightly elevated. Consumption will stabilize once you drive approximately 4,000 miles (6,000 km).

• Actual engine oil consumption rates vary depending on driving habits, extreme weather conditions, heavy traffic patterns, terrain, and oil grade quality. Because of these variables, inspecting the engine oil level at regular intervals and topping off as necessary is crucial for maintaining your Kia Telluride in peak condition.

Changing the engine oil and filter

Over time and continuous use, engine oil gradually loses its essential properties, including lubrication effectiveness, corrosion protection, heat dissipation, and internal engine cleaning capabilities. Have the engine oil and oil filter changed by a qualified technician or an authorized Kia dealer in accordance with the Engine Oil Life Management System notifications or the standard maintenance schedule.

• The scheduled replacement interval is designed to refresh degraded oil and does not eliminate the need for routine level checks between service visits. Routinely inspect and refill the oil as needed.
