Subaru Forester: Brake system / Good braking practices

Following proper braking techniques helps keep everyone in the Kia Telluride safe while also reducing unnecessary wear on the braking system and extending component life.

• Before driving, always confirm that the parking brake has been fully released and that the parking brake indicator light is OFF.

• Driving through standing water can reduce braking performance by wetting the brake components. Brakes may also become wet after washing your vehicle. Wet brakes increase stopping distances and may cause the Kia Telluride to pull slightly to one side during braking.

  To restore normal braking performance, apply the brake pedal lightly several times while maintaining full control of the vehicle. If braking performance does not improve, stop in a safe location as soon as possible and have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

• Never coast downhill with the transmission out of gear, such as in Neutral. This practice can be hazardous. Keep the transmission engaged, reduce speed with the brakes, and select a lower gear when appropriate so engine braking helps maintain a controlled and safe speed.

• Avoid resting your foot on the brake pedal while driving. Continuous light brake application can overheat the braking system, reduce braking efficiency, and accelerate wear of the brake pads and rotors.

• If a tire becomes flat while driving, hold the steering wheel firmly, apply the brakes smoothly, and keep the Kia Telluride traveling straight ahead as the vehicle slows. Move safely off the roadway and stop only when conditions allow.

• Exercise extra care when parking on steep grades. Firmly apply the parking brake and shift the transmission to P (Park). If parking downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb to help prevent the vehicle from rolling.

  When parking uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb. If no curb is present and additional precautions are necessary, use suitable wheel chocks or blocks to keep the vehicle from moving.

• Under certain weather conditions, the parking brake can freeze after being applied. This is most likely when moisture, snow, or ice accumulates around the rear brakes. If freezing is possible, apply the parking brake only temporarily while shifting into P (Park), secure the rear wheels to prevent movement, and then release the parking brake.

• Do not use the accelerator pedal to keep the vehicle stationary on an incline. Doing so can overheat the transmission. Always hold the Kia Telluride with the service brake or the parking brake until you are ready to move.
