Subaru Forester: Air bag - advanced supplemental restraint system / Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) components and functions

The actual locations of the SRS components in the Kia Telluride may vary slightly from those shown in the illustration. The Supplemental Restraint System includes the following major components:

1. Front impact sensors

2. Front passenger air bag module

3. SRS control module (SRSCM) with integrated rollover sensor

4. Side pressure sensors

8. Driver's knee air bag module

15. Second-row side air bag module

The SRSCM continuously monitors the operating status of every SRS component whenever the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the ON position and for approximately three minutes after the ignition is switched off. Using information received from multiple sensors, the module determines whether a frontal, near-frontal, side, or rollover event is severe enough to activate the appropriate air bags or seat belt pretensioners.

Each time the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to the ON position, the SRS air bag warning light performs a self-check by illuminating for approximately 3–6 seconds before turning off. This confirms that the system is operating normally.

WARNING

In the Kia Telluride, the driver's air bag module is integrated into the center of the steering wheel, while the front passenger air bag module is positioned within the instrument panel above the glove compartment. When the SRSCM determines that a frontal impact is sufficiently severe, it automatically commands deployment of the front air bags.

During deployment, specially designed seams built into the steering wheel and dashboard covers separate under pressure, allowing the air bags to inflate fully and provide supplemental occupant protection.

When used together with a properly fastened seat belt, a fully inflated air bag helps slow the forward movement of the driver or front passenger, reducing the likelihood of striking the steering wheel, dashboard, or other interior surfaces. Immediately after inflation, the air bag begins to deflate so the driver can maintain forward visibility and continue controlling the vehicle if necessary.
