Subaru Forester: Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) / Tire replacement with TPMS

If a tire loses pressure or sustains a flat while driving, the low tire pressure indicator light will illuminate on your instrument cluster. Have your Kia Telluride inspected and serviced by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible, or carefully replace the flat tire with the temporary spare tire.

Each road wheel on your vehicle is equipped with a dedicated tire pressure sensor mounted inside the tire assembly right behind the valve stem. When swapping rims or mounting winter packages, you must install TPMS-specific wheels that accommodate these internal sensors. To prevent sensor damage, always have your tires serviced by an authorized Kia dealer.

Even after you replace the under-inflated road wheel with the spare tire, the low tire pressure indicator light will remain illuminated on your dashboard until the damaged tire is properly repaired, re-inflated, or replaced.

In addition, the TPMS malfunction indicator light may activate a few minutes after installing the spare tire. This occurs because the spare wheel is not fitted with an active, registered TPMS sensor, causing the vehicle's receiver to report a missing signal.

Once you repair or re-inflate the original tire to the recommended cold inflation pressure and reinstall it, or fit a new TPMS sensor to the spare wheel and have it properly paired by an authorized Kia dealer, both the TPMS malfunction light and the low tire pressure indicator light will turn OFF after a few minutes of continuous driving.

If the warning lights fail to turn OFF after driving for several minutes at moderate speeds, schedule a diagnostic check with an authorized Kia dealer.

When swapping a damaged wheel with the spare tire, the TPMS sensor mounted on the newly installed wheel must be registered and activated, while the sensor on the original wheel stored in the underbody spare tire carrier should be deactivated. If the original sensor remains active while stowed underneath the vehicle, it can send conflicting wireless signals and prevent the monitoring network from functioning correctly. Have all tire and sensor replacements performed by an authorized Kia dealer to maintain proper system synchronization.

Visually inspecting a tire is often unreliable, as a tire can be significantly under-inflated without showing obvious sidewall deflection. Always rely on a high-quality tire pressure gauge to check internal inflation levels accurately. Note that a tire that is warm from driving will yield a higher pressure reading than a cold tire that has been parked for at least 3 hours or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) within that 3-hour window.

Always allow tires to cool down fully before taking pressure measurements. Ensuring the tire is cold before adding air guarantees that you reach the exact manufacturer-recommended inflation pressure specified on your Kia Telluride vehicle placard.

Never inject liquid tire sealant into a tire on a vehicle equipped with TPMS. The liquid compound can coat and ruin the delicate internal tire pressure sensors, leading to operational failures such as:

• The TPMS becoming unable to accurately detect or warn you about sudden, severe pressure drops caused by hazardous road debris, punctures, or nails.

• Unpredictable sensor readings or total communication loss while driving; if you experience any vehicle instability, immediately take your foot off the accelerator pedal, apply gentle and gradual braking force, and slowly steer your Kia Telluride to a safe position well off the active roadway.
