Subaru Forester: Air bag - advanced supplemental restraint system / Precautions

To help reduce the risk of serious injury or death and allow the restraint systems in your Kia Telluride to perform as intended, always observe the following safety precautions:

• Never install a rear-facing child seat or booster seat in the front passenger seating position.

• If a front air bag deploys during a collision, an infant or young child positioned in the front seat could suffer severe or fatal injuries.

• Children younger than 13 years of age should always ride properly restrained in the rear seats. If an older child must occupy the front passenger seat, ensure the seat belt is correctly fastened and move the seat as far rearward as possible.

• Children seated in the rear outboard positions should always use an appropriate Child Restraint System that matches their age, height, and weight.

• Remember the ABC rule: Always Buckle Children in the rear seat. It is the safest seating location for passengers of any age.

• For the highest level of protection in every type of collision, every occupant—including the driver—should wear a properly fastened seat belt at all times, regardless of whether an air bag is installed at that seating position. Never sit unnecessarily close to an air bag module while the Kia Telluride is in motion.

• The SRS air bag system deploys within milliseconds during certain impacts. Occupants who are not wearing a seat belt or who are sitting out of position may be struck with considerable force, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries.

• Driver and front passenger front or side air bags may cause injury if occupants are seated improperly or too close to the deployment area.

• Always sit upright with your back against the seatback, remain centered on the seat cushion, keep your seat belt securely fastened, extend your legs comfortably, and keep both feet on the floor until the vehicle has completely stopped and is parked.

• To reduce the possibility of injury from a deploying front air bag, the driver should maintain the greatest practical distance from the steering wheel while still retaining full control of the vehicle. The front passenger should also sit fully back in the seat with the seat adjusted as far rearward as practical.

• Do not lean against the doors, rest your arms on the door trim, extend your arms outside the window, or position your head or body against the side structure when occupying seats equipped with side or curtain air bags.

• For the best protection from the Kia Telluride side air bag system, both front occupants should remain upright with their seat belts correctly fastened throughout the trip.

• Never place accessories or objects such as dashboard covers, phone mounts, beverage holders, perfume bottles, decorative items, or stickers over or near any air bag module, including the steering wheel, instrument panel, windshield area, or the passenger-side dashboard. Such objects may become dangerous projectiles if an air bag deploys.

• Do not insert or attach objects into openings or trim panels located near the side air bag labels on the seats. These objects may interfere with proper deployment and could lead to unexpected injury during an accident.

• If you use a liquid air freshener inside the vehicle, avoid placing it on the dashboard or near the instrument cluster. During air bag deployment, the container could be thrown into the cabin and injure occupants.

• Keep the deployment zones around all front, side, and curtain air bags completely clear. Never attach or place any items on the doors, side windows, A-, B-, or C-pillars, dashboard, or anywhere an air bag inflates.

The SRS air bags and seat belt pretensioners contain explosive materials. Never dispose of or dismantle a vehicle without first having these components properly removed. Failure to do so could result in fire, explosion, or serious injury. Contact an authorized Kia dealer before scrapping the vehicle.

The Supplemental Restraint System operates only while the vehicle is in the ON position and remains active for approximately three minutes after the vehicle is switched OFF. If the SRS air bag warning light fails to illuminate, remains illuminated for longer than approximately six seconds after the vehicle is turned ON, or comes on while driving, the system may not function correctly. Have the Kia Telluride inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) deploys the front air bags only when the collision is severe enough to require additional occupant protection. Each air bag is designed for a single deployment. For the highest level of safety in your Kia Telluride, always wear your seat belt correctly.

Front air bags are not intended to deploy during every type of accident. They generally do not activate in side impacts, rear impacts, or rollover events, and they also remain inactive in frontal collisions that do not reach the system's deployment threshold.

Never attempt to disassemble, modify, or repair any part of the curtain air bag system. If service is required, have the Kia Telluride inspected and repaired only by an authorized Kia dealer.

Changing the installation angle of crash sensors due to damage or deformation of the front bumper, body panels, or B-pillars may affect proper SRS operation. If your vehicle has sustained body damage, have the system inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Your Kia Telluride is engineered to absorb impact forces and deploy the air bags according to carefully calibrated crash conditions. Use only genuine Kia parts or equivalent-quality replacement components when repairing or replacing the bumpers or related body parts, as incorrect components may negatively affect collision performance and air bag operation.

Before the vehicle is towed, switch the ignition to the OFF position and wait approximately three minutes. During this period, the side and curtain air bags may still deploy if the rollover sensor detects a rollover condition while the vehicle is in the ON or recently switched OFF state.

Deactivate the front passenger air bag only while the vehicle is in the OFF position. Attempting to change the system status while the ignition is on may cause an SRS malfunction and could prevent the driver, front passenger, side, or curtain air bags from deploying correctly during a collision.

Before replacing a fuse or disconnecting the battery, always turn the Kia Telluride to the OFF position. Never remove or install any air bag-related fuse while the vehicle is in the ON position. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SRS air bag warning light to remain illuminated and could affect system operation.

The Supplemental Restraint System activates the front air bags only when crash severity reaches the programmed deployment threshold.

Front air bags are generally not designed to deploy in side-impact, rear-impact, or rollover collisions, and they do not inflate during low-speed frontal impacts that remain below the activation threshold.

The side and curtain air bags are designed to deploy during certain side impacts or rollover events that are severe enough to help reduce the risk of serious injury to occupants.

During a rollover event, the air bags inflate almost instantly to provide supplemental protection and help reduce occupant movement inside the Kia Telluride.

The rollover sensor can trigger the side and curtain air bags whenever it detects rollover conditions or a significant possibility of a rollover, depending on the nature of the incident.

Although the driver's and front passenger's air bags are primarily intended for frontal impacts, they may also deploy in certain other collision types if the front impact sensors detect sufficient crash forces. Likewise, the side and curtain air bags are primarily designed for side impacts, but they may also deploy in rollover situations or other qualifying events when the side impact or rollover sensors determine that additional occupant protection is necessary. Even in situations where a rollover does not fully occur, deployment may take place if the system predicts a significant rollover risk. In addition, driving over severe bumps, rough terrain, curbs, or obstacles can generate forces that may activate the sensors under certain conditions. Drive carefully on unpaved roads and other uneven surfaces to reduce the possibility of unintended air bag deployment.
