Subaru Forester: Rear Cross-traffic Collision-avoidance Assist (RCCA) / Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-avoidance Assist operation

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-avoidance Assist warns the driver and may help control the vehicle according to the level of collision risk detected while the Kia Telluride is reversing. The system operates through the following stages:

  • Collision Warning

  • Emergency Braking

  • Stopping the vehicle and ending brake control

Collision Warning

  1. Collision Warning

Collision Warning alerts the driver with a warning light on the outside rearview mirror, a warning message on the instrument cluster, an audible alert, and steering wheel vibration.

The Collision Warning notification may also appear on the infotainment system screen, helping the driver recognize approaching cross traffic while reversing.

Collision Warning operates when all of the following conditions are satisfied:

  • The gear is shifted to R (Reverse) and the vehicle speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h).

  • An approaching vehicle is detected approximately 82 ft (25 m) from the left or right side of your vehicle.

  • The vehicle approaching from the left or right is traveling faster than 3 mph (5 km/h).

TIP

  • If the operating conditions are met, the system can provide a warning when a vehicle approaches from either side, even if the Kia Telluride is not moving.

  • The displayed images, symbols, and colors may appear differently depending on the instrument cluster type or selected display theme.

Emergency Braking

  1. Emergency Braking

Collision Warning may alert the driver with a warning light on the outside rearview mirror, a warning message, an audible warning, and steering wheel vibration when a collision risk is detected.

The Collision Warning message may also be shown on the infotainment system screen.

Emergency Braking can assist by applying braking control to help reduce the risk of a collision with a vehicle approaching from the left or right while the Kia Telluride is reversing.

Emergency Braking operates when all of the following conditions are satisfied:

  • The gear is shifted to R (Reverse) and the vehicle speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h).

  • An approaching vehicle is detected approximately 5 ft (1.5 m) from the left or right side of your vehicle.

  • The vehicle approaching from the left or right is traveling faster than 3 mph (5 km/h).

TIP

Brake control ends under the following conditions:

  • The approaching vehicle moves outside the detection range.

  • The approaching vehicle has already passed behind your vehicle.

  • The approaching vehicle is no longer traveling toward your vehicle.

  • The approaching vehicle slows down.

  • The driver presses the brake pedal with sufficient force.

Stopping the vehicle and ending brake control

  1. Drive carefully

When Emergency Braking brings the Kia Telluride to a stop, a warning message appears on the instrument cluster to notify the driver that braking assistance has been applied.

You should immediately press the brake pedal yourself and carefully check the area around the vehicle before continuing to move.

  • Brake control ends approximately 2 seconds after Emergency Braking stops the vehicle.

  • During Emergency Braking, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist automatically cancels braking control if the driver presses the brake pedal with excessive force.

WARNING

  • For your safety, change Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist settings only after parking the vehicle in a safe location.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist may not display a warning message or sound an audible alert if another system warning message or warning sound is being generated at the same time.

  • You may not hear the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist warning sound in noisy surroundings. Keep the cabin volume at an appropriate level and remain attentive while reversing.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate if the driver manually brakes to avoid a collision.

  • During Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist operation, the Kia Telluride may stop suddenly. This could cause passengers to move unexpectedly or unsecured objects to shift. Always wear seat belts and keep loose items properly secured.

  • The vehicle’s normal braking system remains available even if Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist has a problem.

WARNING

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist automatically cancels braking control if the driver presses the accelerator pedal excessively.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist cannot operate in every situation and cannot prevent every collision.

  • Depending on road, parking, sensor, and driving conditions, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist may warn late or may not warn at all.

  • The driver is always responsible for controlling the vehicle. Do not rely only on Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist. Maintain a safe distance, check both sides carefully, and press the brake pedal when necessary to slow or stop the vehicle.

  • Never depend on Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist to avoid collisions with people, animals, or objects. Failure to check the surroundings directly may result in serious injury or death.

TIP

Brake control may not operate properly depending on the current status of Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Only a warning may be provided under the following conditions:

  • The ESC warning light is illuminated.

  • ESC is currently operating for another function.

WARNING

  • If Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist applies braking assistance, immediately press the brake pedal yourself and check the surroundings of the Kia Telluride.

  • After shifting to R (Reverse), braking control operates once for vehicles approaching from each side, left or right.
