Warning and control

Safe Exit Assist on the Kia Telluride provides the following functions to help protect occupants when exiting the vehicle:

  • Vehicle Detection

  • Collision Warning (when exiting the vehicle)

  • Safe Exit Assist linked to Electronic child safety lock

Vehicle Detection

The system monitors approaching traffic from the rear and, when the following conditions are met, illuminates the warning indicators in the outside rearview mirrors, the second-row door indicator, and the Head-Up Display (if equipped):

  • Vehicle speed: 2 mph (3 km/h) or below.

  • Approaching rear-side vehicle speed: 4 mph (6 km/h) or higher.

  • A detected vehicle enters the monitored warning zone.

  1. Collision Warning

If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle has been detected, the Kia Telluride activates Collision Warning. The outside rearview mirror warning light flashes, a warning message appears on the instrument cluster, and an audible alert is generated to encourage occupants to wait until it is safe to exit.

  1. Check traffic in the blind spot, then try again

When this function is activated, the warning light in the outside rearview mirror flashes and a warning message is displayed on the instrument cluster.

  • The Safe Exit Assist function integrated with the Electronic child safety lock temporarily prevents the child lock from being released, even if the Electronic child safety lock button is pressed, whenever the following conditions are met:

    • Your vehicle speed is below 2 mph (3 km/h).

    • An approaching vehicle from the rear is traveling faster than 4 mph (6 km/h).

    • The detected vehicle enters the monitored warning area.

TIP

For additional information about the Electronic child safety lock button, refer to the Electronic child safety lock system section.

TIP

If you press the Electronic child safety lock button within 10 seconds after the warning message appears, the Kia Telluride interprets this as the driver's intentional decision to unlock the rear doors after checking surrounding traffic. The Electronic child safety lock switches OFF as indicated by the button, allowing the rear doors to open. Always confirm that it is safe before overriding the protection.

WARNING

If a rear door is opened from outside the vehicle, it can still be opened regardless of Safe Exit Assist operation.

TIP

  • For safety, adjust Kia Telluride driver assistance settings only while the vehicle is parked in a safe location.

  • Safe Exit Assist may not display a warning message or sound an audible alert if another driver assistance system is already displaying a warning or generating a warning tone.

  • Warning sounds may be difficult to hear in noisy surroundings or when loud audio is playing inside the vehicle.

  • Safe Exit Assist cannot detect every possible hazard and is not capable of preventing every collision scenario.

  • Depending on road, traffic, and environmental conditions, Safe Exit Assist may issue a delayed warning or may not provide a warning. Always visually check your surroundings before opening a door.

  • The driver and all passengers remain responsible for ensuring it is safe to exit the Kia Telluride. Never rely solely on the assistance system.

  • Do not intentionally test or misuse Safe Exit Assist, as doing so could lead to serious injury or death.

TIP

  • After the Kia Telluride is turned OFF, Safe Exit Assist continues operating for approximately 3 minutes. The function switches OFF immediately once the vehicle doors are locked.

  • The illustrations, icons, and colors shown on the instrument cluster may differ depending on the cluster design, software version, or selected display theme.
