Subaru Forester: Vehicle safety system / Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)

The Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system is designed to further enhance the stability and steering performance of the Kia Telluride in situations where additional assistance may be beneficial. It works together with other vehicle control systems to help maintain predictable handling under changing road conditions.

• When driving on slippery or low-traction road surfaces.

• When the system detects a difference in road grip between the left and right wheels.

WARNING

VSM operation

During normal VSM operation, you may notice slight brake pulsation or minor steering feedback from the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system. These responses are completely normal and indicate that the system is actively assisting vehicle stability.

The VSM system does not operate under the following conditions:

• While driving on a heavily banked roadway, steep incline, or similar sloped surface.

• When the transmission is in R (Reverse).

• When the ESC OFF indicator remains illuminated on the instrument cluster.

• When the MDPS warning indicator remains illuminated on the instrument cluster.

VSM operation OFF

If you press the ESC OFF button to disable the Electronic Stability Control system, the Vehicle Stability Management system is also turned off, and the ESC OFF indicator light () appears on the instrument cluster.

To restore normal VSM operation, press the ESC OFF button again. Once the indicator light turns off, the system is active and ready to assist.

WARNING

Malfunction indicator

The VSM system may automatically deactivate even if you have not pressed the ESC OFF button. This typically indicates that the system has detected a malfunction within the MDPS or VSM control system. If either the ESC indicator or the MDPS warning light remains illuminated, have your Kia Telluride inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Vehicle Stability Management is intended as a supplemental safety feature and should never replace attentive driving. Always maintain a safe following distance, monitor surrounding traffic, and keep both hands on the steering wheel while driving.

Your Kia Telluride responds directly to driver steering inputs regardless of whether VSM is active. Continue to observe safe driving practices, especially during poor weather, on uneven pavement, or whenever road traction is reduced.
